The Example of Temperance in All Things.

1. II Peter 1:5-7 KJV Although “self-control” is the word chosen by the NIV translators, this Bible study guide will be focused on the word “temperance” used in the King James Version of the Bible. What comes to your mind when you see the word “self-control? (NIV)” What does “temperance” (KJV) mean to you?

2. Galatians 5:22-24 What is the source of the ability to be temperate (to master desires, passions, and the sensual appetites?)

3. Galatians 6:7-9 Do you think “temperance” has anything to do with “sowing to the Spirit?” Explain.

4. I Corinthians 9:25-27 Give some examples of how to be “temperate in all things.” (KJV) The NIV uses the comparison to the “strict training” of an athlete. Compare “strict training” for a sport, or other activity, you are familiar with to living a Christian life.

5. Matthew 16:24-27; Galatians 5:24-25 How would the trait of temperance enable you to obey Jesus’ command “to deny yourself?” What effect would this mind-set of temperance and self-denial have on your life?

6. Leviticus 23:27-32; Hebrews 9:11-15, 24-28 The Day of Atonement, one of the feasts of the Lord given to the people of God, foreshadowed the Atonement Jesus made to take away our sins. Why do you think “afflicting their souls” was required on that day? What meaning, if any, do you think this has for Christians today?

7. I Peter 4:12-16; Philippians 1:29-30 In what ways, will, or does, following Christ involve suffering? How would the unwillingness to suffer by being “temperate in all things” hinder your service to God?

8. Acts 24:24-25 (KJV) Why do you think Paul included an exhortation for temperance in his talk to Felix? What would make Felix so afraid he trembled? Why do you think temperance seems insignificant or irrelevant in our thinking today?

9. Luke 2:36-38 (NIV) How did Anna model temperance? What effect did her temperance have on her life? What application is there in her example for you?
